A common problem found in most 2-story homes is that during the summer, the upstairs is too hot, and during the winter, making the downstairs comfortable overheats the upstairs.

During the hot summer months, the upstairs needs more cooling. When cooling is activated, the downstairs space is cooled to its comfort temperature. The upstairs doesn't cool at the same rate and the upstairs temperature continues to rise even though cooling cycles on and off. The upstairs can be as much as 10 degrees hotter than the downstairs.

During the winter, the downstairs needs more heating. When heating is activated, the downstairs space is heated to its comfort temperature but the upstairs becomes overheated causing discomfort and wasted energy.
